In 1975, the Los Angeles Lakers made a historic trade. They sent rookie center Elmore Smith to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for veteran guard Butch Lee and rookie forward Mike Bratz. The Lakers also received a first-round draft pick, which they would use to select a player from the high school ranks. The Cavaliers were in rebuilding mode and didn’t have much use for Smith, so they traded him to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Lucius Allen. The Lakers used the pick to select Kobe Bean Bryant from Lower Merion High School in Philadelphia. Bryant spent his first few years in the NBA primarily coming off of the bench. He didn’t become a starter until the 1997-98 season, when he was 23 years old. That year, he averaged 15.4 points per game and led the Lakers to the NBA Finals.
